Sri Subramanya Pancharathnam

Sri Subramanya Pancharathnam is the Slokam in praise of and as prayer to Bhagwan Subramanya who is also known by the innumerable names such as Muruga, Karthikeya and Kumara.

Sri Subramanya Pancharathnam contains five stanzas each describing the attributes and virtues of Bhagwan Muruga. The last additional stanza mentions the benefits of chanting this slokam.

Sri Subramanya Pancharathnam is provided in Devanagari and English scripts with a simple English translation.

Version 1

षडाननं चन्दन लेपिताङ्गं
महोरसं दिव्य मयूर वाहनम्
रुद्रस्य सूनं सुरलोक नाथं
ब्रह्मण्य देवं शरणं प्रपद्ये (1)

mahoarasaM dhivya mayoora vaahanam
rudhrasya soonaM suraloaka naaThaM
brahmaNya dhaevaM sharaNaM prapadhyae

Sri Subrahmanya has six faces. He is smeared with sandal paste all over His person. He is the essence of divinity. He rides on peacock. He is the Son of Rudhra, Bhagwan Shiva. He is the Lord of the Devas.
He is the ultimate God of supreme consciousness. I ardently seek refuge at His holy feet.

जाज्वल्य मानं सुर वृन्द वन्द्यं
कुमार धारातट मन्दिरस्थम्
कन्दर्प रूपं कमनीय गात्रं
ब्रह्मण्यदेवं शरणं प्रपद्ये (2)

jaajvalya maanaM sura vrundha vandhyam
kumaara DhaaraathaTa mandhiraSTham
kandharpa roopaM kamaneeya gaathraM

Sri Subrahmanya is resplendent. He is ardently bowed and worshipped by Devas. He has the temple at the banks of Kumara Dhara river. He has the charming appearance and an excellent physique.
He is the ultimate God of supreme consciousness. I ardently seek refuge at His holy feet.

द्विषड्भुजं द्वादशदिव्यनेत्रं
त्रयीतनुं  शूलमसी दधानम्
शेषावतारं कमनीयरूपं
ब्रह्मण्यदेवं शरणं प्रपद्ये (3)

dhvishaD-bhujam dhvaadasha-dhivya-nethraM
thrayee-thanuM shoolamasi dhaDhaanam
shesha-avathaaraM kamaneeya roopaM
brahmaNya dhaevaM sharaNaM prapadhyae

Sri Subrahmanya has twelve shoulders. He has twelve divine eyes. He is the Son of Bhagwan Shiva who has three eyes. He has trident in His hand. He is the incarnation of Snake Deity. He is of very pleasing appearance.
He is the ultimate God of supreme consciousness. I ardently seek refuge at His holy feet.

सुरारि घोराह वशोभ मानं
सुरोत्तमं शक्तिधरं कुमारम्
सुधार शक्त्यायुध शोभिहस्तं
ब्रह्मण्यदेवं शरणं प्रपद्ये (4)

suraari ghoraaha vashobha maanaM
suroththamaM shakthi-DharaM kumaaram
suDhaara shakthya-ayuDham shobhi-hasthaM
brahmaNya dhaevaM sharaNaM prapadhyae

Sri Subrahmanya appears as the powerful light creating fear in the minds of the enemies of the Devas. He is the greatest and the best of the Deities. He is the Son of Shakthi, Sri Parvathi Devi. He holds the dazzling weapon (spear) given by Sri Shakthi in His hand.
He is the ultimate God of supreme consciousness. I ardently seek refuge at His holy feet.

इष्टार्थ सिद्धि प्रदमीशपुत्रं
मिष्टान्नदं भूसुर कामधेनुम्
गङ्गोद्भवं सर्व जनानुकूलं
ब्रह्मण्यदेवं शरणं प्रपद्ये (5)

ishTaartha siddhi pradham-eeshaputhraM
mishTa-annadhaM bhoosura kaamaDhenum
ganGgoad-bhavaM sarva jana-anukoolam
brahmaNya dhaevaM sharaNaM prapadhyae

Sri Subrahmanya grants all the Sidhis. He is the Son of Sri Parameshwara, Bhagwan Shiva. He provides for food to the noble similar to the celestial holy cow Kamadhenu. He had risen from Ganga. He provides help and support to all people.
He is the ultimate God of supreme consciousness. I ardently seek refuge at His holy feet.

यः श्र्लोक पञ्चमिदं पठतीह भक्त्या
ब्रह्मण्य देव विनिवेशित मानसः सन्
प्राप्नोति भोगमखिलं भुवि यद्यदिष्टमन्ते
स गच्छति मुदा गुहा साम्य मेव  (6)

yah sloka panchamidham paTatheeha bhakthyaa
brahmaNya dhaeva viniveshitha maanasah sana
praapnoathi bhogam-akhilaM bhuvi yadhyadhiShTamanthe
sa gachChathi mudaa guhaa samaya maeva

The persons who sincerely read and recite this slokam shall realize the supreme consciousness in their self. All their wishes shall be attained till they exist on the earth and they will reach the holy abode of Sri Subrahmanya at the end.

Version 2

विमल निज पदाब्जं वेदवेदान्त वेधं
मम कुल गुरुदेहं वाद्यगान प्रमोहम्
रमण सुगुण जालं रङ्गराट्भासित नेयम्
कमल जनुत पादं कार्तिकेयं भजामि (1)

vimala nija padha-abjaM vedha-vedhaantha veDhaM
mama kula guru-dhaehaM vaadhyagaana pramoaham
ramaNa suguNa jaalaM ranGgaraat-bhaasitha-naeyam
kamala janutha paadhaM kaarthikeyaM bhajaami

Sri Karthikeya is the pure, true and the inner core of the Vedas and Vedantas. He is our teacher. He is fond of the instrumental music. He is charming. He has excellent attributes. He creates illusions.  He is the guiding and illuminating spirit of life. I ardently revere His holy lotus feet.

शिव शरवण जातं शैव योग प्रभावं
भव हित गुरु नाथं भक्त ब्रुन्द प्रमोदम्
नव रस म्रुदु पादं नादह्रींकार रूपं
कवन मधुर सारं कार्तिकेयं भजामि (2)

bhava hitha guru naaThaM bhaktha brundha pramodham
nava rasa mrudhu paadhaM naadhahreeMkaara roopaM

Sri Karthikeya is born of Sri Shiva. He is the core and the prowess of Shiva Yoga. He bestows prosperity. He is the teacher and the Lord. He blesses happiness to His devotees. His feet are the essence of softness. His appearance is the personification of the mantra “Hreem”. He has risen from the water (Ganga). His attributes are the essence of sweetness. I ardently revere Him.

पाकाराति सुता मुखाब्ज मधुरं बालेन्द्र मौलिक्षरं
लोकानुग्रह कारणं शिवसुतं लोकेश तत्व प्रदम्
राका चन्द्रस मानचारु वदनमम्भोरुह वल्लीक्षरं
ह्रीम्कार प्रणव स्वरूप लहरीं श्रीकार्तिकेयं भजे

paakaaraathi suthaa mukhaabja maDhuraM baalendhra maulikSharaM
lokaanugraha kaaraNaM shivasuthaM lokesha thathva pradham
raakaa chandhrasa maanachaaru vadhanamambhoruha valleekSharaM
hreemkaara praNava svaroopa lahareeM shreekaarthikeyaM bhaje

Sri Karthikeya had appeared from the face (third eye) of Bhagwan Shiva who has the crescent moon on His head. He was born to Bhagwan Shiva for the purpose of protecting the universe. He is the core philosophy behind the existence of the universe. His pleasant appearance is resplendent as the core and essence of the full moon. His face (six faces) is (are) like the bunch of flowers (which are sought by the bee hovering above).  His appearance is the personification of the mantra “Hreem” and the Pranava mantra “Om”. I ardently revere Him.

महा देव जातं शरवणभवं मन्त्र शरभं
महत्तत्वानन्दं परमल हरीमन्द मधुरम्
महादेवातीतं सुख गणयुतं मन्त्रवरदं
ग्रुहं वल्लीनाथं मम ह्रिदि भजे ग्रुद्ध गिरिशम्

mahaa dheva jaathaM sharavaNabhavaM manthra sharabhaM
mahath-thathva-anandhaM paramala hareemandha maDhuram
mahaa-dheva-atheethaM sukha-gaNa-yuthaM manthra-varadhaM
gruhaM valleenaaThaM mama hridhi bhaje grudhDha girisham

Sri Karthikeya belongs to Sri Maha Deva, Bhagwan Shiva. He is the embodiment of the mantra “Sha Ra Va Na Bha Va”.  He is the eternal core of the supreme consciousness.  His eyes are as bright as the Sun. He is the personification of great divinity. He gives happiness to the celestial warriors. He blesses and bestows the mantras. He is the consort of Sri Valli Devi. He lives on the hills. I ardently revere Him in my heart.

नित्याकारान्निकिल वरद निर्मलं ब्रह्म तत्वं
नित्यन्देवैर्विनुत चरण निर्विकल्पादि योगम्
नित्याट्यान्तं निगम विदित निर्गुणन्देव नित्यं
वन्दे मम गुरु वर निर्मलं कार्तिकेयम् (5)

nithya-akaaraan-nikila varadha nirmalaM brahma thathvaM
nithyan-dhevair-vinutha charaNa nir-vikalpaadhi yogam
nithyaat-yaanthaM nigama vidhitha nirguNan-dheva nithyaM
vandhe mama guru vara nirmalaM kaarthikeyam

Sri Karthikeya provides and grants sustenance to all. He is without blemish. He is the core of supreme consciousness. He is ardently and devoutly worshipped by the Devas. His stature is without any fault. He is eternal and everlasting. He is known as the root of eternity. He is without any characteristic. I sincerely bow and pray to Sri Karthikeya who is the teacher, benefactor and untainted.
