॥चौपाई – 1॥

नमो नमो दुर्गे सुख करनी ।
नमो नमो अम्बे दुःख हरनी ॥ १ ॥
namo namo durge sukha karani ।
namo namo ambe duhkha harani ॥ 1 ॥
Meaning: I surrender to you O Goddess Durga, the bestower of all happiness! I bow to you O Goddess Amba! who ends all sufferings.

॥चौपाई – 2॥

निराकार है ज्योति तुम्हारी ।
तिहूँ लोक फैली उजियारी ॥ २ ॥
nirankara hai jyoti tumhari ।
tihu loka phaili ujiyari ॥ 2 ॥
Meaning: The brightness of your light is infinite and penetrating, and you enlighten all the three worlds (Earth, Heaven, and the Netherworld).

अन्नपूर्णा हुई जग पाला ।

Meaning: Lord Shiva and all yogis eternally chant your praise; Brahma, Vishnu, and all other Gods ever meditate on you.

रूप सरस्वती को तुम धारा ।
दे सुबुद्धि ऋषि-मुनिन उबारा ॥ ९ ॥

Meaning: You also appear in the form of Goddess Saraswati to grant knowledge to the sages and thus ensure their well-being.

Meaning: Hence, you protected Prahlaad and Hiranyakashyap also went to Heaven as your hands slew him.

लांगुर वीर चलत अगवानी ॥ १७ ॥
kehari vahana soha bhavani ।

Meaning: You are relaxing gracefully upon your vehicle of Lion. O Goddess Bhavani, you are greeted by Lord Hanuman (the brave Langur).

कर में खप्पर-खड्ग विराजै ।
जाको देख काल डर भाजे ॥ १८ ॥
kara me khappara khanga virajai ।
jako dekha kala dara bhajai ॥ 18 ॥
Meaning: When you appear in the form of Goddess Kali with a sword in one hand and a conch in the other, even time escapes in panic.

सोहै अस्त्र और त्रिशूला ।
जाते उठत शत्रु हिय शूला ॥ १९ ॥
sohal kara me astra trisula ।
jate uthata satru hiya sula ॥ 19 ॥
Meaning: Beholding you well-armed, with a Trident in your hand, the enemy’s heart throbs with the sting of fear.

नगर कोटि में तुम्हीं विराजत ।
तिहुंलोक में डंका बाजत ॥ २० ॥
naga koti me tumhi birajata ।
tihu loka me danka bajata ॥ 20 ॥
Meaning: You also repose in the form of the Devi at Nagarkot in Kangara. Thus all the three realms shiver in the force of your majesty.

शुम्भ निशुम्भ दानव तुम मारे ।
रक्तबीज शंखन संहारे ॥ २१ ॥
sumbha nisumbha danava tuma mare ।
raktabija sankhana samhare ॥ 21 ॥
Meaning: You slew the demons such as Shumbhu, Nishumbhu, and massacred a thousand forms of the dreaded demon Raktabeeja.

महिषासुर नृप अति अभिमानी ।
जेहि अघ भार मही अकुलानी ॥ २२ ॥
mahisasur nrpa ati abhimani ।
jehi agha ra mahi akulani ॥ 22 ॥
Meaning: When the earth was severely suffered by bearing the load of the sins of the buffalo demon Mahishasura.

रूप कराल कालिका धारा ।
सेन सहित तुम तिहि संहारा ॥ २३ ॥
rupa karala kali ko dhara ।
sena sahita tuma tihi samhara ॥ 23 ॥
Meaning: You assumed the dreadful form of Goddess Kali and killed him along with his soldiers.

परी गाढ़ सन्तन पर जब-जब ।
भई सहाय मातु तुम तब तब ॥ २४ ॥
pari bhira santana para jaba jaba ।
bha-i sahaya matu tuma taba taba ॥ 24 ॥
Meaning: Thus, whenever the faithful saints were distressed, it is you O Mother, who came to their salvation.

अमरपुरी अरु बासव लोका ।
तब महिमा सब रहें अशोका ॥ २५ ॥

tava mahima saba kahai asoka ॥ 25 ॥
Meaning: All the realms including the Amarpuri (divine realm) remain sorrowless and happy by your blessings, O Goddess!

प्रेम भक्ति से जो यश गावै ।
दुःख दारिद्र निकट नहिं आवें ॥ २७ ॥
prema bhakti se jo jasa gavai ।
duhkha daridra nikata nahi avai ॥ 27 ॥
Meaning: He who sings your glory with the devotion of love and sincerity remains beyond the reach of misery and hardship.

ध्यावे तुम्हें जो नर मन लाई ।
जन्म-मरण ताकौ छुटि जाई ॥ २८ ॥
dhyaven tumhai jo nara mana la-i ।
janma-marana so chuuti jaahi ॥ 28 ॥
Meaning: He who meditates upon your form with concentration goes beyond the cycle of births and deaths.

॥चौपाई – 29॥

जोगी सुर मुनि कहत पुकारी ।
योग न हो बिन शक्ति तुम्हारी ॥ २९ ॥
jogi sura-muni kahata pukari ।
yoga na ho-i bina sakti tumhari ॥ 29 ॥
Meaning: All the Yogis, Gods, and Saints openly declare that without your favor one cannot establish communication with God.

शंकर आचारज तप कीनो ।
काम अरु क्रोध जीति सब लीनो ॥ ३० ॥
sankara acaraja tapa kino ।
kama, krodha jiti saba lino ॥ 30 ॥
Meaning: Shri Shankaracharya had done once a special penance called Acharaj and by which he had overcome his anger and desire.

निशिदिन ध्यान धरो शंकर को ।
काहु काल नहिं सुमिरो तुमको ॥ ३१ ॥
nisidina dhyana dharo sankara ko ।
kahu kala nahl sumirau tumako ॥ 31 ॥
Meaning: He (Shankaracharya) always worshipped Lord Shankar and never for a moment pondered his mind on you.

शक्ति रूप को मरम न पायो ।
शक्ति गई तब मन पछितायो ॥ ३२ ॥
sakti rupa ko marama na payau ।
sakti ga-i taba mana pachitayau ॥ 32 ॥
Meaning: Since he (Shankaracharya) did not realize your immense glory, all his powers subsided, and the lamented heretofore.

॥चौपाई – 33॥

शरणागत हुई कीर्ति बखानी ।
जय जय जय जगदम्ब भवानी ॥ ३३ ॥
saranagata hu-i kirti bakhani ।
jaya jaya jaya jagadamba bhavani ॥ 33 ॥
Meaning: Then, he (Shankaracharya) asked refuge in you, chanted your glory and sang ‘Victory, Victory, Victory’ to you O Jagdamba Bhavani.

॥चौपाई – 34॥

भई प्रसन्न आदि जगदम्बा ।
दई शक्ति नहिं कीन विलम्बा ॥ ३४ ॥
bhai prasanna adi jagadamba ।
da-I sakti nahi kina bilamba ॥ 34 ॥
Meaning: Then, O Great Goddess Jagdambaji, you were satisfied, and in no time you presented him with his lost powers.

॥चौपाई – 35॥

मोको मातु कष्ट अति घेरो ।
तुम बिन कौन हरै दुःख मेरो ॥ ३५ ॥
moko matu kasta ati ghero ।
tuma bina kauna hare duhkha mero ॥ 35 ॥
Meaning: O, Mother! Severe sufferings distress me, and no one except Your Honoured Self can provide relief. Please end my pains.

॥चौपाई – 36॥

आशा तृष्णा निपट सतावे ।
मोह मदादिक सब विनशावै ॥ ३६ ॥
Aasha thrushna nipata satavai ।
ripu murakha mohi ati dara pavai ॥ 36 ॥
Meaning: Hopes and wishes always bother me. All sort of passions and lust torment my heart ever.

॥चौपाई – 37॥

शत्रु नाश कीजै महारानी ।
सुमिरौं इकचित तुम्हें भवानी ॥ ३७ ॥
satru nasa hije maharani ।
sumiro ikacitta tumhe bhavani ॥ 37 ॥
Meaning: Destroy my foes, O Queen; I remember you singlemindedly, O Bhavani!

करो कृपा हे मातु दयाला ।
ऋद्धि-सिद्धि दे करहु निहाला ॥ ३८ ॥
krpa karo he matu dayala ।
kruddhi siddhi dai karahu nihaalaa ॥ 38 ॥
Meaning: O, forgiving Mother! Shower me your blessings and make me feel happy by bestowing me with all sorts of wealth and powers.

जब लगि जियउं दया फल पाऊं ।
तुम्हरो यश मैं सदा सुनाऊं ॥ ३९ ॥
jaba lagi ji-u dayaphala paun ।
tumharau jasa mai sada suna-u ॥ 39 ॥
Meaning: O, Mother! May I be the repository of your grace as long as I live, ever recounting the feats of your glory to all.

दुर्गा चालीसा जो नित गावै ।
सब सुख भोग परमपद पावै ॥ ४० ॥
durga chalisa jo ko-i gavai ।
saba sukha bhoga paramapada pavai ॥ 40 ॥
Meaning: He whoever sings this Durga Chalisa shall ever enjoy all sorts of pleasures and shall attain the highest position in the end.
