In Sanskrit, Hanuman actually means ‘disfigured jaw’.

History of Lord Hanuman

Lord Hanuman is well recognized because of his monkey face. He belonged to the tribe called VANARA It is believed that Hanuman is the incarnation of Lord Shiva. Lord Hanuman is the fervent devotee of Lord Rama. He played an important role in the war against the Rakshasha King Ravana by Lord Rama who went to Lanka to rescue his wife Sita who was abducted by Ravana.

He is the son of Anjana and Vayu, the God of wind. One morning Hanuman felt very hungry. He saw a big red ball in the east and thought it was a fruit. So he leaped into the air to catch hold of that red ball and eat. But it was the rising sun. Indra, the Lord of Heaven who saw the boy approaching the sunfast, feared that he might be got hurt, he hit Hanuman with his weapon Vajrayudha. Hanuman fell down and his face got hurt and swollen. Vayu, father of Hanuman became very angry and became standstill. Because of that, there was no air to breathe for all the living things. Then all the Gods came and appealed Vayu. Brahma blessed the boy that no weapon will be able to kill Hanuman and Yama blessed that he will be immortal (i.e. Chiranjeevi).

Rama went exile along with Sita and Lakshmana for 14 years as per the request of His father Dasaratha. At that time Sita was abducted by Ravana, the Rakshasa king of Lanka islands. When they went in search of Sita they visited the mountains ruled by Sugriva. When Sugriva came about the sad incident he ordered Hanuman to go in search of Sita.

Hanuman with his great ability found Sita in Lanka Islands and brought the good news to Rama. Sugriva and other monkeys constructed a bridge to Lanka. Rama and Lakshmana flew to Lanka on the shoulders of Hanuman. There Rama and Lakshmana fought fiercely with Ravana and brought back Sita.

As per the epic Mahabharatha, Hanuman is considered to be the brother of Bhima.

Festivals For Lord Hanuman

The birthday of Hanuman is celebrated on the day of Moola nakshatra of Margazhi month (December-January) in Tamil Nadu. In some parts of India, it is observed on the full moon day of Chitra month (April). On the day of Hanumath Jayanthi devotees fast whole day, praise him with lots of hymns and poojas. Special poojas will be organized in temples. In some villages as Hanuman is considered the God of Power, wrestlers and bodybuilders will organize competitions.

Hanuman Chalisa” is one of the most important slokas about Hanuman. This is written by the great Indian poet Sri Tulsidas.
