Sri Rama Raksha Stotram

Sri Rama Raksha Stotram is the Slokam in prayer to and in praise of Lord Rama, the seventh incarnation of Sri Maha Vishnu.

Sri Rama Raksha Stotram is said to be composed by Sri Budha Kaushika. The Slokam describes the attributes and compassion of Sri Ramachandra Murthy. The benefits of chanting this Slokam are embedded in the text itself.

The Slokam is presented in Devanagari and English Scripts with a simple English translation.

Humble Salutations to Sri Ganesha. Sage Budha Kaushika has composed this hymn. The presiding Deity is Sri Seetha Ramachandhra. The meter is anushtup. The Shakthi (energy) Sri Seetha Devi.  The main pivot is Sri Hanuman and the Slokam has to be recited.

ध्यायेदाजानु बाहुं धृत शर धनुषं बद्पद्‌मासनस्थं
पीतं वासोवसानं नव कमल दल स्पर्धिनेत्रं प्रसन्नम्‌
वामाङ्‌कारूढ सीता मुख कमल मिलल्लोचनं नीरदाभं
नानालङ्‌कार दीप्तं दधत मुरुजटा मण्डनं रामचंद्रम्‌ (2)

Dhyaayedha-ajaanu baahuM Dhrutha shara DhanuShaM badha-padhma-asana-sThaM
peethaM vaasoa-vasaanaM nava kamala dhala sparDhi-naethraM prasannam
vaamaan-GKaarooDa seethaa mukha kamala milal-lochanaM neeradhaabhaM

The meditation on the Slokam thus begins. The devotee should keep Sri Rama in his mind and meditate on Him. Sri Rama has the hands which reach upto His knees; He is holding the bow and the arrow; He is seated in lotus posture; He adorns yellow color garments; His eyes resemble the petals of the lotus; He looks pleased; His eyes are towards the lotus like face of Sri Seetha Devi; His complexion is that of a water laden rain cloud; He adorns various ornaments and He has his mane upto His thighs.

चरितं रघु नाथस्य शत कोटि प्रविस्तरम्‌
एकैकमक्षरं पुंसां महा पातक नाशनम्‌ (3)

charithaM raghu naaThasya shatha koati pravistharam
ekaikam-akSharaM puMsaaM mahaa paathaka naashanam

The history of Sri Rama Chandra, the leader born in Raghu clan is as vast as hundred crores. Each and every syllable in the story is capable of diminishing even the greatest of the sins.

ध्यात्वा नीलोत्पल श्यामं रामं राजीवलोचनम्‌
जानकी लक्ष्मणॊपेतं जटा मुकुट मण्डितम्‌ (4)

Dhyaathvaa neeloathpala shyaamaM raamaM rajeeva-loachanam
jaanakee lakShmaNo paethaM jataa mukuta maNditham

Let our mind dwell on Sri Rama who is as dark complexioned as Neelothpala flower, who has lotus eyes, who is with Sri Janaki and Sri Lakshmana and who adorns His mane as His crown.

सासि तूण धनुर्बाणपाणिं नक्तं चरान्तकम्‌
स्वलीलया जगत्त्रातुमाविर्भूतमजं विभुम्‌ (5)

saasi thooNa Dhanur-baaNa-paaNiM nakthaM chara-anthakam
sva-leelayaa jagaththra-athuma-avir-bhootham-ajaM vibhum

Let our mind dwell on Sri Rama who has the sword, bow and arrows, who has destroyed the demons and who is not simply born but arrived as incarnation to save and protect the universe with His activities.

रामरक्षां पठॆत्प्राज्ञ: पापघ्नीं सर्व कामदाम्‌
शिरो मे राघव: पातु भालं दशरथात्मज: (6)

Raama-rakShaaM paTeth-praagnah paapaghneeM sarva kaamadhaam
shiroa mae raaghavah paathu bhaalaM dhashaaraThaathmajah

Let the learned read and recite the Rama Raksha Stotram which diminishes the sins; It grants the desires; May Sri Raghava, the descendent of Raghu Clan protect my head; and May Sri Rama, the son of Dasaratha protect my forehead.

कौसल्येयो दृशौ पातु विश्वामित्र प्रिय: श्रुती
घ्राणं पातु मखत्राता मुखं सौमित्रि वत्सल: (7)

kausalyeyo dhrushau paathu vishvaamithra priyah shruthee
ghraaNaM paathu makhathraathaa mukhaM saumithri vathsalah

May Sri Rama, the son of Kausalya, protect my eyes; May Sri Rama, the favorite disciple of Sri Viswamithra protect my ears; May Sri Rama, the protector of Yagnas / Homams protect my nose; and May Sri Rama, who is fond of Sri Lakshmana (the son of Sumithra) protect my mouth.

जिह्वां विद्यानिधि: पातु कण्ठं भरतवंदित:
स्कन्धौ दिव्यायुध: पातु भुजौ भग्नेश कार्मुक: (8)

jihvaaM vidhyaaniDhih paathu kaNTaM bharatha-vandhithah
skanDhau dhivya-ayuDhah paathu bhujoa bhagnaesha kaarmukhah

May Sri Rama, the ocean of knowledge and wisdom, protect my tongue; May Sri Rama, who is worshipped by Sri Bharatha, protect my neck; May Sri Rama, who has the divine powerful weapons protect my shoulders; and May Sri Rama, who had broken the Shiva Dhanush protect my upper arms.

करौ सीतपति: पातु हृदयं जामदग्न्यजित्‌
मध्यं पातु खरध्वंसी नाभिं जाम्बवदाश्रय: (9)

karou seethapathih paathu hrudhayaM jaamadhagnya-jith
maDhyaM paathu kharaDh-vaMsee naabhiM jaambava-dhaashyah

May Sri Rama, the consort of Sri Seetha Devi protect my hands; May Sri Rama, who had conquered Jamadagni, protect my heart; May Sri Rama, who had killed the demon Karadh protect my midriff; and May Sri Rama, who gave refuge to Jambavatha, protect my naval.

सुग्रीवेश: कटीं पातु सक्थिनी हनुमत्प्रभु:
ऊरू रघुत्तम: पातु रक्ष:कुलविनाशकृत्‌ (10)

sugreevaeshah kateeM paathu sakThinee hanumath-prabhuh
ooroo raghooththamah paathu rakShah kulavinaasha-kruth

May Sri Rama, the Lord of Sugreeva, protect my waist; May Sri Rama, the Lord of Sri Hanuman protect my hips; May Sri Rama, the best in the Raghu clan and who had diminished the lineage of the demons protect my thighs.

जानुनी सेतु कृत्पातु जङ्‌घे दशमुखान्तक:
पादौ बिभीषण श्रीद: पातु रामोSखिलं वपु: (11)

jaanunee saethu kruth-paathu janGghae dhashamukha-andhakah
paadhau vibheeShaNa shreedhah paathu raamo(A)khilaM vapuh

May Sri Rama, who had built the Sethu bridge protect my knees; May Sri Rama, who had destroyed the ten faced Ravan protect my shins; May Sri Rama, who bestowed wealth to Vibheeshana protect my feet; and May Sri Rama, the protector of the universe protect me fully.

एतां राम बलोपेतां रक्षां य: सुकृती पठॆत्‌
स चिरायु: सुखी पुत्री विजयी विनयी भवेत्‌ (12)

eathaaM raama baloapaethaaM rakShaaM yah sukruthee paTeth
sa chiraayuh sukhee puthree vijayee vinayee bhaveth

May the good persons who sincerely read and recite this Slokam which is embedded with the energy and powers of Sri Rama be blessed and bestowed with long life, happiness, progeny, success and humility.

पाताल भूतल व्योम चारिण श्छद्‌मचारिण:
न द्र्ष्टुमपि शक्तास्ते रक्षितं रामनामभि: (13)

paathaala bhoothala vyoama chaariNa shChadh-machaariNah
na dhruShtumapi shakthaasthae rakShithaM raama-naamabhih

Any being roaming below, above and around the earth surreptitiously varying its appearances cannot cast its eye on the ardent devotee of Sri Rama protected by Sri Rama Nama; Such being cannot bring any harm to the said devotee.

रामेति रामभद्रेति रामचंद्रेति वा स्मरन्‌
नरो न लिप्यते पापैर्भुक्तिं मुक्तिं च विन्दति (14)

raamaethi raama-bhadhraethi raamachandhraethi vaa smaran
naro na lipyathae paapair-bhukthiM mukthiM cha vindhathi

The sincere devotee who keeps chanting the name of Sri Rama as Sri Rama Bhadra, Sri Rama Chandra and other names shall prosper in the world; No sin can attach to him; He will attain salvation.

जगज्जेत्रैकमन्त्रेण रामनाम्नाभिरक्षितम्‌
य: कण्ठे धारयेत्तस्य करस्था: सर्व सिद्धय: (15)

jagaj-jaethrai kamanthraeNa raama-naamnaabhi-rakShitham
yah kaNTae Dhaarayeth-thasya karasThaah sarva siDhdhayah

The sincere devotee who wears the Sri Rama Nama (which has conquered and protected the universe) around his neck shall have all the powers and yogic attributes at his disposal.

वज्र पञ्चर नामेदं यो राम कवचं स्मरेत्‌
अव्याहताज्ञ: सर्वत्र लभते जय मङ्गलम् (16)

vajra pancchara naamaedhaM yoa raama kavachaM smaraeth
aavyaaha-thaagnah sarvathra labhathae jaya manGgalam

The sincere devotee who adorns the name of Sri Rama gets the impenetrable shield of protection; He shall be blessed with success and auspiciousness in all his endeavours.

आदिष्टवान्‌ यथा स्वप्ने रामरक्षामिमां हर:
तथा लिखितवान्‌ प्रात: प्रबुद्धो बुधकौशिक: (17)

aadhiShtavaan yaThaa svapnae raama-rakSham-imaaM harah
thaTaha likhithavaan praathah prabhudhDhoa buDha-kaushikah

Lord Shiva had commanded Budha Kaushika to compose this Rama Raksha Stotram in his dream and he had done so soon on waking up in the morning.

आराम: कल्पवृक्षाणां विराम: सकलापदाम्‌
अभिरामस्त्रिलोकानां राम: श्रीमान्‌ स न: प्रभु: (18)

aaraamah kalpa vrukShaaNaaM viraamah sakala-apadhaam
abhi-raamas-thriloakaanaaM raamah shreemaan nah prabhuh

Lord Sri Rama is the fulfiller of all the wishes; He removes the obstacles; He provides protection; He is praised in all the three worlds; He is indeed our Lord and protector.

तरुणौ रूप संपन्नौ सुकुमारौ महाबलौ
पुण्डरीक विशालाक्षौ चीरकृष्णाजिनाम्बरौ (19)

tharuNau roopa saMpannau sukumaarau mahaa balau
puNdareeka vishaala-akShau cheera-kruShNa-ajinaam-barau

May the two siblings Sri Rama and Sri Lakshmana protect and save us; They are youthful, handsome, have eyes like lotus and are adorned with the deer-skin.

फल मूलशिनौ दान्तौ तापसौ ब्रह्मचारिणौ
पुत्रौ दशरथस्यैतौ भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ (20)

phala moolashinau dhaanthau thaapasau brahmachaariNau
puthrau dhasharaThasyathau bhraatharau raama-lakShmaNau

May the two siblings Sri Rama and Sri Lakshmana, the sons of Dasaratha, the brothers who subsist on fruits and roots, who do penance and practice celibacy, the scions of Raghu clan protect and save us.

शरण्यौ सर्व सत्वानां श्रेष्ठौ सर्व धनुष्मताम्‌
रक्ष:कुल निहन्तारौ त्रायेतां नो रघुत्तमौ (21)

sharaNyo sarva sathvaanaaM shreShTo sarva DhanuShmathaam
rakShah kula nihanthaarau thraayethaaM noa raghuththamau

May the two siblings Sri Rama and Sri Lakshmana who are the best of the archers, who are the protectors of those who take refuge in them, who destroy and diminish the demons and who are the scions of Raghu clan protect us.

आत्त सज्ज धनुषा विषु स्पृशा वक्षया शुग निषङ्‌ग सङि‌गनौ
रक्षणाय मम रामलक्ष्मणा वग्रत: पथि सदैव गच्छताम्‌ (22)

aaththa sajja dhanuShaa viShu sprushaa vakShayaa shuga niShanGga sanGginau
rakShaNaaya mama raama-lakShmaNaa vagrathah paThi sadhaiva gachChathaam

May the two siblings Sri Rama and Sri Lakshmana with their bows pulled up, with their hands on the arrows and with the quivers full of arrows always escort and protect me as my Lords and Gods in the path where I tread.

सन्नद्धः कवची खड्‌गी चाप बाणधरो युवा
गच्छन्‌ मनोरथन्नश्च राम: पातु सलक्ष्मण: (23)

sanaadhDhah kavachee khadgee chaapa baaNa Dharo yuvaa
gachChan manoraThannashcha raamah paathu sa-lakShmaNah

Lord Sri Rama is always ready and armed with sword, shield, arrows and bow along with similarly armed Sri Lakshman. Sri Ram is like the realization of our cherished dreams. May the two siblings Sri Rama and Sri Lakshmana protect us.

रामो दाशरथि: शूरो लक्ष्मणानुचरो बली
काकुत्स्: पुरुष: पूर्ण: कौसल्येयो रघूत्तमः (24)

raamo dhaasharaThih shooro lakShmaNanu-charo balee
kaakuthsah puruShah poorNah kausalyaeyo raghooththamah

Lord Sri Rama is the stalwart of Raghu clan and the son of Dasaratha and Kausalya; Accompanied by Sri Lakshmana, Sri Rama is always ever powerful and perfect as the Lord.

वेदान्त वेद्यो यज्ञेश: पुराण पुरुषोत्तम:
जानकी वल्लभ: श्रीमानप्रमेय पराक्रम: (25)

vaedhantha vaedhyo yagneshah puraaNa puruShoththamah
jaanakee vallabhah shreemaan-apramaeya paraakramah

Lord Sri Rama is perceived and understood through Vedas and Vedantha; He is the presiding Lord of the Yagnas / Homams; He is the traditional Deity; He is the love and consort of Sri Janaki Devi; His courage and bravery are immeasurable.

इत्येतानि जपेन्नित्यं मद्भक्तः श्रद्धयान्वितः
अश्वमेधाधिकं पुण्यं सम्प्राप्नोति न संशयः (26)

ithyaethaani japaen-nithyaM madhbhakthah shradhDhaya-anvithah
ashvameDha-aDhikaM puNyaM sampraapnoathi na saMshayah

(Lord Shiva says) Any devotee of mine sincerely reading and reciting the names of Lord Sri Rama daily shall attain spiritual enlightenment and fulfillment; This enrichment shall be much better than the virtuous benefits of conducting ashva-medha Yagna; There need not be any dis-belief or doubt in this aspect.

रामं दूर्वादल श्यामं पद्‌माक्षं पीत वाससम्‌
स्तुवन्ति नामभिर्दिव्यैर्न ते संसारिणो नर: (27)

raamaM dhoorvaadhala shyaamaM padhmaakShaM peetha vasasam
sthuvanthi naamaabhir-dhivyairna thea saMsaariNoa narah

The persons who sincerely read and chant this praise on Lord Sri Rama who has lotus like eyes and adorned with yellow clothes are not ordinary humans entrapped in worldly life. They get spiritual liberation and moksha.

रामं लक्ष्मण पूर्वजं रघुवरं सीतापतिं सुन्दरम्
काकुत्स्थं करुणार्णवं गुणनिधिं विप्रप्रियं धार्मिकम्
राजेन्द्रं सत्यसन्धं दशरथतनयं श्यामलं शान्तमूर्तिम्
वन्दे लोकाभिरामं रघुकुल तिलकं राघवं रावणारिम् (28)

raamaM lakShmaNa poorvajaM raghuvaraM seethapathiM sundharam
kaakuthsThaM karuNaarNavaM guNaniDhiM vipra-priyaM Dhaarmikam
rajaendhraM sathya-sanDhaM dhasharaTha-thanayaM shyaamalaM shaantha-moorthim
vandhae loakabhi-raamaM raghukula thilakaM raaghavaM ravaNaarim

Humble Salutations to Lord Sri Rama who
-is the elder brother of Sri Lakshmana;
-is the Lord and consort of Sri Seetha Devi;
-is handsome;
-is the great scion of Raghu clan;
-is full of compassion;
-is the ocean of virtues;
-is beloved by vedic scholars;
-is the protector of dharma;
-is the royal emperor;
-is the practitioner and upholder of the truth;
-is the son of Dasarath;
-is of dark complexion;
-is the personified Lord of peace and tranquility;
-is admired in the universe;
-is the pride of Raghu dynasty;
-is pleasing to the eyes; and
-is the enemy of the demon Ravana.

रामाय रामभद्राय रामचंद्राय वेधसे
रघु नाथाय नाथाय सीताया: पतये नम: (29)

raghu naaThaaya naThaaya seethaayaah pathayae namah

Humble Salutations to Lord Sri Rama who is
-as cool and kind as moon;
-is victorious and excellent;
-is the core of Vedas;
-is the scion of Raghu clan;
-is the Lord; and
-is the Lord and consort of Sri Seetha Devi.

Humble Salutations to Lord Sri Rama who is
-the descendent of Raghu dynasty;
-is the elder brother of Sri Bharatha; and
-is the tormentor of His enemies in war.

श्रीराम चन्द्र चरणौ मनसा स्मरामि
श्रीराम चन्द्र चरणौ वचसा गृणामि
श्रीराम चन्द्र चरणौ शिरसा नमामि
श्रीराम चन्द्र चरणौ शरणं प्रपद्ये (31)

shree raama chandhra charaNau vachasaa gruNaami
shree raama chandhra charaNau shirasaa namaami
shree raama chandhra charaNau sharaNaM prapadhyae

I humbly and devoutly surrender to the holy feet of Sri Rama Chandra Murthy.
I dwell on them in my mind;
I praise them in my talks;
I bow my head to them; and
I always seek and take refuge and sanctuary in them.

माता रामो मत्पिता रामचन्द्रः
स्वामी रामो मत्सखा रामचन्द्रः
सर्वस्वं मे रामचन्द्रो दयालु
नान्यं जाने नैव जाने न जाने (32)

mathaa raamoa math-pithaa raama-chandhrah
svaamee raamoa math-sakhaa raama-chandhrah
sarvasvaM mae raama-chandhroa dhayaalu
naanyaM jaanae naiva jaanae na jaanae

Lord Sri Rama is my Mother, my Father, my Master and my Friend. Really, all I have is only the kind hearted Sri Rama. I really do not know anything or anybody else.

दक्षिणे लक्ष्मणो यस्य वामे तु जनकात्मजा
पुरतो मारुतिर्यस्य तं वन्दे रघुनंदनम्‌ (33)

dhakShiNae lakShmaNoa yasya vaamae thu janaka-athmajaa
purathoa maaruthir-yasya thaM vandhae raghu-nandhanam

Humble Salutations to Sri Rama who has
-His brother Lakshmana in His right side;
-Sri Seetha Devi, the daughter of Janaka in His left side; and
-Sri Maruthi (Anjaneya) in the front.

लोकाभिरामं रणरङ्गधीरं राजीवनेत्रं रघुवंशनाथम्‌
कारुण्यरूपं करुणाकरं तं श्रीरामचंद्रं शरणं प्रपद्ये  (34)

loaka-abhi-raamaM raNa-ranGga-DheeraM raajeeva-naethraM raghuvaMsha-naaTham
kaaruNya-roopaM karuNaakaraM thaM shree-raama-chandhraM sharaNaM prapadhyae

I ardently seek and take refuge in Lord Sri Rama who
-is pleasing to the eyes of all;
-is the master of the war;
-has eyes like lotus;
-is the Lord of the Raghu clan;
-is in the form of compassion; and
-is filled with love and compassion.

मनोजवं मारुततुल्यवेगं जितेन्द्रियं बुद्धिमतां वरिष्ठम्‌
वातात्मजं वानरयूथमुख्यं श्रीरामदूतं शरणं प्रपद्ये (35)

manoajavaM maarutha thulyavaegaM jithaendhriyaM buDhdhimathaaM variShtam
vathaathmajaM vaanara yooTha mukhyaM shreeraamadhoothaM shirasaa namaami

Sri Hanuman has the swift insight; He is as fast as the wind; He has the complete command over His senses; He is the supreme amongst the wise scholars; He is the son of the wind God Vayu; He is the chief of the vanara army. I humbly surrender and bow my head to Sri Anjaneya, the emissary of Sri Rama.

कूजन्तं रामरामेति मधुरं मधुराक्षरम्‌
आरुह्य कविताशाखां वन्दे वाल्मीकिकोकिलम्‌ (36)

koojanthaM raama-raamaethi maDhuraM maDhura-akSharam
aaruhya kavithaa-shaakhaaM vandhae valmeekee-koakilam

I offer my humble salutations to the great sage Sri Valmiki who has sung the glorious names of Lord Sri Rama in Srimadh Ramayana as sweetly as a cuckoo singing perched atop a tree .

आपदामपहर्तारं दातारं सर्वसंपदाम्‌
लोकाभिरामं श्रीरामं भूयो भूयो नमाम्यहम्‌  (37)

aapadhaam-apaharthaaraM dhaathaa-raaM sarva-sampadhaam
lokaaBhi-raamaM shree-raamaM bhooyo bhooyo namaam-yaham

I repeatedly bow to and offer my humble salutations to Lord Sri Rama who
-protects me from danger;
-bestows wealth; and
-is admired by all.

भर्जनं भवबीजानामर्जनं सुखसंपदाम्‌
तर्जनं यमदूतानां रामरामेति गर्जनम्‌ (38)

bharjanaM bhava-beejaa-naamarjanaM sukhasaMpadhaam
tharjanaM yama-dhoothaanaaM raama-raamaethi garjanam

The chanting of the names of Sri Rama is the sure way to diminish the cause of re-birth thereby granting liberation from the ties of worldly life. It bestows all wealth. It scares the messengers of Sri Yama.

रामो राजमणिः सदा विजयते रामं रमेशं भजे
रामेणाभिहता निशाचरचमू रामाय तस्मै नमः
रामान्नास्ति परायणं परतरं रामस्य दासोस्म्यहं
रामे चित्तलयः सदा भवतु मे भो राम मामुद्धर (39)

raamoa raajamaNih sadhaa vijayathae raamaM raameshaM bhaje
raamaeNa-abhihathaa nishaa-chara- chamoo raamaaya thasmai namah
raamaan-naasthi paraayaNaM paratharaM raamasya dhasoa-smyahaM
raamae chiththa-layah sadhaa bhavathu mae bho raama maamudhDhara

Humble Salutations to Lord Sri Rama who
-is the precious gem amongst the Kings;
-is my focus of worship;
-has diminished the demons;
-is eternal; and
-is the focal point of my prayers.
There is nothing or nobody beyond Him. I am His humble servant. My mind and thoughts are fully absorbed in Sri Rama. This verse is the essence of Sri Rama.

श्रीराम राम रामेति रमे रामे मनोरमे
सहस्रनाम तत्तुल्यं राम नाम वरानने (40)

sahasra naama thaththulyaM raama naama varaananae

I get pleasure in chanting “Sri Rama” always. Chanting Sri Rama once is equal to chanting the any other name of the Supreme God one thousand times.
