Sri Pandurangashtakam

Sri Pandurangashtakam
Sri Pandu Ranga

Sri Pandurangashtakam is the Slokam in praise of and as prayer to Sri Pandu Ranga, the manifestation of Lord Vishnu.

Sri Pandurangashtakam was composed by Sri Adi Sankaracharya. It has eight stanzas with an additional stanza on phalasruthi which mentions the benefits of chanting.

Sri Pandurangashtakam dwells on the attributes of Sri Pandu Ranga, the presiding Deity at Pandharpur, Maharashtra. Pandharpur is one of the Divya Desams. This is the only Divya Desam temple where Bhakts are allowed to touch the feet of Sri Pandu Ranga with the head.

The sight of Sri Pandu Ranga standing with His two hands on His hip wearing Makara Kundal in the ears is the mesmerizing sight. He wears dhoti in the shorter form as a kid ready to run to help others.

Sri Adi Shankara had seen Sri Pandu Ranga as the symbol of Para Brahma Swaroopam, the basic divinity from which all the Deities appeared.

The Devanagari and the English scripts with a simple English translation are provided in this narrative.

He is at the seat of Maha Yoga, the supreme level. He had come to the bank of the river Bheemarthi (Chandra Bhaga). He had granted boons to His Bhakt Pundarika. He had come to Pandharpur with revered Sages. He blesses by being in the standing position. He is the crux of the eternal bliss.

His dresses dazzle like lightning on His blue colored resplendent form. His appearance is the temple for Sri Ramaa, His consort. His appearance is beautiful and it showcases the brilliance of the consciousness. His form itself is the personification of the blessing of the boons to the devout Bhakts. However, he has put both His feet equally on a brick (for His devotees to touch with their heads).

He holds His waist with His hands. This posture appear to suggest that the level of the worldly life of His devotees is only upto His waist. He is Sri Maha Vishnu who holds the stem of the lotus on which even Sri Brahma has to live.
