Sri Bilva Stotram

Lord Shiva
Lord Shiva

Sri Bilva Stotram is the compilation of chants worshipping Bhagwan Shiva. The chants are recited while submitting the bilva leaf to Bhagwan Shiva in prayers. This can be chanted even as a prayer song in the sanctum.

Bilva called as Vilvam in Tamil, is as auspicious as Tulasi. While tulasi is used to do Puja for Sri Maha Vishnu, bilva is used for doing Puja for Sri Shiva. The biological name of bilva is Aagel Marmelos and it has excellent medicinal powers.

Beliefs with respect to bilva leaf

The trifoliate bilva is said to represent
-three Murti such as Brahma, Vishnu & Shiva;
-three eyes of Shiva; and
-His trident.

As per Sri Shiva Puran, a bilva is considered to be equal to 1000 lotuses.

In a bilva leaf,
-Sri Brahma resides at its bottom;
-Bhagwan Vishnu lives in its middle; and
-Bhagwan Shiva lives in its tip.

As per Sri Bilva Shtakam, the Bilva tree emanated from the breast of Sri Lakshmi.

As per Sri Skanda Puran, Bilva has emanated from the sweat droplets of Sri Parvathi Devi when they fell on Mandara mountains.

Goddess Parvathi exists in the Bilva tree in all Her manifestations as mentioned below:
-At the roots, She resides as Girija, the mountain born;
-At the trunk, She resides as Maheshwari, the consort of Maheshwar;
-At the branches, She resides as Dakshayani, the daughter of Daksha;
-At the leaves, She resides as Parvathi, the daughter of mountain King;
-At the fruits, She resides as Katyayani, the mother of Karthikeya; and
-At the flowers, She resides as Gauri who did penance to marry Shiva.

The unique speciality of Bilva leaves is that the leaves used for a puja can be reused for doing puja in other sessions. Even dried up Bilva leaves can be used for puja.

Sri Bilva Stotram

Sri Bilva Stotram

This comprises of Sri Bilvashtakam (8 stanzas) and Sri Bilva Ashtotram (108 stanzas). Sri Adi Sankaracharya is considered as the composer of both the Slokas. As per the legend, Sri Bilva Stotram is said to be the conversation between Sri Maha Vishnu and Goddess Parvathi Devi as Siva Rahasya.

However, there are various versions of both the Slokas which exceed the limit of 8 and 108 stanzas. Hence the Slokas are combined and provided here. This narrative contains the Devanagari script, English transliteration and a simple English translation.
