Lord Muruga

Sri Subramanya Ashtakam is the Slokam in praise of and as prayer to Sri Subramanya, one of the manifestations of Bhagwan Muruga.

Sri Subramanya Ashtakam has eight stanzas each describing the attributes of Bhagwan Muruga. The additional stanza mentions the benefits of reading and reciting this Ashtakam.

Sri Subramanya Ashtakam is also called as Sri Subramanya Karavalambam as each of the Stanza seeks the blessings and protection of the hands of Sri Subramanya Swamy. In this Slokam, Lord Muruga is prayed as the Lord and consort of Sri Valli Devi.

Sri Subramanya Ashtakam is presented in the Devanagari and the English scripts with a simple English translation.

हे स्वामिनाथ करुणाकर दीन बन्धो
श्री पार्वतीश मुख पङ्कज पद्मबन्धो
श्री शादि देव गण पूजित पाद पद्म
वल्लीस नाथ मम देहि करावलम्बम् (1)

shree paravathe-esha mukha panGkaja padhma banDhoa
shree shaadhi dhaeva gaNa poojitha paadha padhma

Bhagwan Muruga is the Leader of the Gods. He is full of compassion and mercy. He is the benefactor of the poor and the oppressed people. He is the Son of the lotus faced Sri Parvathi and Bhagwan Shiva.  His lotus feet are ardently worshipped by the Devas, the Ganas (the celestial warriors) and Sri Mahalakshmi.
I seek the protection from the hands of Sri Subramanya, the Bhagwan and the consort of Sri Valli Devi.

देवादि देवनुत देव गणाधि नाथ
देवेन्द्र वन्द्य मृदु पङ्कज मञ्जु पाद
देवर्षि नारद मुनीन्द्र सुगीत कीर्ते
वल्लीस नाथ मम देहि करावलम्बम् (2)

dhaevaadhi dhaevanutha dhaeva gaNaDhi naThaa
dhaevendhra vandhya mrudhu panGkaja manchju paadaa
dhaevarShi naaradha muneendhra sugeetha keerthae
valleesa naaTha mama dhaehi karaavalambam

Bhagwan Muruga is the divinest of the God of the Gods. He is the Lord of the Gods. His supple lotus feet are ardently worshipped by Indra, the head of Devas. Sages like Narada have sung and praised Bhagwan Muruga.
I seek the protection from the hands of Sri Subramanya, the Bhagwan and the consort of Sri Valli Devi.

नित्यान्न दान निरताखिल रोग हारिन्
तस्मात्प्रदान परिपूरित भक्त काम
शृत्यागम प्रणव वाच्य निज स्वरूप
वल्लीस नाथ मम देहि करावलम्बम् (3)

thasmaath-pradhaana paripooritha bhaktha kaama
shruthya-agama praNava vaachya nija swaroopa

Bhagwan Muruga is the one who ensures daily food. He alleviates the illness in the world. He blesses the fortune. He fulfills the wishes of His ardent devotees. He is the personification of the Pranava Mantra as mentioned in the Vedas and Agamas.
I seek the protection from the hands of Sri Subramanya, the Bhagwan and the consort of Sri Valli Devi.

क्रौञ्चा सुरेन्द्र परिखण्डन शक्ति शूल
पाशादि शस्त्र परिमण्डित दिव्य पाणे
श्रीकुण्डलीश धृत तुण्ड शिखीन्द्र वाह
वल्लीस नाथ मम देहि करावलम्बम् (4)

krounjchaa surendhra parikhaNdana shakthi shoola
paashadhi shasthra parimaNditha divya paaNae
shree-kuNdaleesha Dhrutha thuNda shikheendhra vaaha
valleesa naaTha mama dhaehi karaavalambam

Bhagwan Muruga, as the Lord of Devas, had destroyed the asura Krouncha with the spear.  He is praised for adorning trident, goad and other weapons. He has rich ear ornaments. He rides on the peacock.
I seek the protection from the hands of Sri Subramanya, the Bhagwan and the consort of Sri Valli Devi.

देवादि देव रथमण्डल मध्य वेद्य
देवेन्द्र पीठ नगरं दृढ चापहस्तम्
शूरं निहत्य सुर कोटि भिरीड्यमान
वल्लीस नाथ मम देहि करावलम्बम् (5)

dhaevaadhi dhaeva raTha-maNdala maDhya vaedhya
dhaevendhra peeTa nagaraM DhruDa chaapa hastham
shooraM nihathya sura koati bhiree-dyamaana
valleesa naaTha mama dhaehi karaavalambam

Bhagwan Muruga is the God of the Gods. He rides in the middle chariot amongst the group of chariots. He protects Lord Indra from the troubles. He is quick at sending arrows. He had killed Shura Padma and was praised and hailed by the crores of Devas.
I seek the protection from the hands of Sri Subramanya, the Bhagwan and the consort of Sri Valli Devi.

हारादि रत्न मणि युक्त किरीटहा
केयूर कुण्डल लसत्कवचाभिराम
हे वीर तारक जयाज़्मर बृन्द वन्द्य
वल्लीस नाथ मम देहि करावलम्बम् (6)

heeradhi rathna maNi yuktha kireetahaa
kaeyura kuNdala lasath-kavacha-abhiraama
hae veera thaaraka jayaa-jamara brundha vandhya
valleesa naaTha mama dhaehi karaavalambam

Bhagwan Muruga adorns the crown and the garlands made of diamonds and precious gems.  He adorns bracelets, ear rings and body armor made of precious gems. He was the mighty one who had killed the asura Tharaka. He is ardently worshipped by Devas.
I seek the protection from the hands of Sri Subramanya, the Bhagwan and the consort of Sri Valli Devi.

पञ्चाक्षरादि मनु मन्त्रित गाङ्गतोयैः,
पञ्चामृतैः प्रमुदितेन्द्र मुखै र्मुनीन्द्रैः
पट्टाभिषिक्त हरियुक्त परास नाथ
वल्लीस नाथ मम देहि करावलम्बम् (7)

pancha-aksharadhi manu manthritha gaanGga thoayaih
pancha-mruthaih pramudhi-thendra mukhair mune-endhryaih
pattabhi-Shiktha hariyuktha paraasa naaTha
valleesa naaTha mama dhaehi karaavalambam

Bhagwan Muruga was crowned as the Leader of Devas by Indra. He is praised with the chanting of pancha akshara with taking holy dip in the Ganges. He is worshipped by the holy chants of the sages. He is done abhishekam with pancha amrit.
I seek the protection from the hands of Sri Subramanya, the Bhagwan and the consort of Sri Valli Devi.

श्री कार्तिकेय करुणामृत पूर्ण दृष्ट्या
कामादि रोग कलुषीकृत दुष्ट चित्तम्
भक्त्वा तु मामव कलाधर कान्तिकान्त्या
वल्लीस नाथ मम देहि करावलम्बम् (8)

shree kaarthikaeya karuNa-amrutha poorNa dhruShtyaa
kamaadhi roaga kaluShi-krutha dhruShta chitham
bhakthvaa thu maamava kalaaDhara kaanthi-kaanthyaa
valleesa naaTha mama dhaehi karaavalambam

Bhagwan Muruga is known as Sri Karthikeya. He bestows merciful boons with his nectar like looks. He annihilates the unholy passions and deceases by His vision. He is the paragon of arts. He dazzles like a brilliant sun.
I seek the protection from the hands of Sri Subramanya, the Bhagwan and the consort of Sri Valli Devi.

सुब्रह्मण्य करावलम्बं पुण्यं ये पठन्ति द्विजोत्तमाः
ते सर्वे मुक्ति मायान्ति सुब्रह्मण्य प्रसादतः
सुब्रह्मण्य करावलम्बमिदं प्रात रुत्थाय यः पठेत्
कोटि जन्मकृतं पापं तत्‍क्षणादेव नश्यति (9)

subrahmaNya karaavalambaM puNyaM yae paTanthi dhvijoa-ththamah
thae sarvae mukthi maayaanthi subrahmaNya prasadhathah
subrahmaNya karaavalambam-idhaM praatha ruThaaya yah paTaeth
koati janma- kruthaM paapaM thath-kShaNaa-dhaeva nashyathi

The person who sincerely reads and recites this Subramanya Karavalambam shall attain moksha with the grace of Bhagwan Muruga. The person who sincerely reads and recites this Karavalambam early in the morning shall get his sins committed in the crores of his births vanish in a second.
